Andy Masley, Director, Effective Altruism DC
Andy Masley is the Director of Effective Altruism DC, where he focuses on strengthening the Washington, D.C. area’s professional effective altruism network, supporting community members, managing projects, and helping the organization grow and thrive. In his role, Andy works to connect people across a wide range of cause areas, from AI and biosecurity to global health and animal welfare, building spaces where ideas and careers can flourish. In addition to his leadership at EA DC, Andy has become known for his independent writing and analysis on AI, data centers, and environmental narratives. Over the past year, he has published influential posts on his Substack and appeared on podcasts and public forums unpacking myths around data center energy and water use, emphasizing clarity and nuance in public conversations about technology and the environment. His work has been cited in broader discussions about water use statistics and media representation of AI’s environmental footprint. Before Effective Altruism DC, he was a high school physics teacher for 7 years. Outside of job Andy spends most of his time with friends, reading, watching movies, listening to music, and exercising.
