The rate of data center construction will not likely be slowing soon. Availability of skilled tradesmen has already been stretched. Even while most communities consider these workers to be "essential", they must still be protected to the greatest extent that is practical. If too many people are clustered in a work environment, and an outbreak occurs, there is no winner.

Industry data can already be shown that strategic implementation of structural elements of data centers provides an economic advantage. Some builders use this as their primary method of construction of facilities, from small through mega-scale, also providing scheduling advantages, which can also be detailed.

In addition to these data points, it can now be pointed out how the change to an approach based on modular, pre-manufactured elements moves the work force from the relatively random, chaotic space of a construction site, to a factory floor, where a full set of practices and protocols can keep more persons safer, while keeping the project more productive.

Concepts will be illustrated to help visualize the value of this method of construction, using appropriate data.

Takeaway

The current rates of construction are not likely to subside just yet, and these jobs must get resourced.

The current physical distancing restrictions are not likely to be relaxed soon; distancing can limit the number of persons that can access the site

A strategy of planning projects where greater amounts of scope are pre-manufactured can simultaneously mitigate covid challenges, while lowering overall installation costs, and improving schedule.

Data will show the advantages to installing component-based structures vs. "stick-built" structures, whether mechanical systems, electrical systems, or entire facilities.
