Prysmian, in cooperation with its partners Consolidated Edison and Exelon, is developing a hands-free medium voltage underground power cable splicing machine to dramatically improve workforce safety and splicing caused medium-voltage network failures (from 60-80% to less than 5%). The proposed machine fits down a utility hole and is operated above reducing the time crews spend in underground vaults. The machine would implement advanced techniques for completing the splice including laser cutting and a vision system with machine learning to maintain quality control.
Takeaway
Error-Free splicing machine improves workplace safety and reduces splicing failures.
Advanced techniques including laser cutting and machine learning are used to maintain reliability and quality control.
