Going Beyond Renewable PPAs, Sustainable Power Solutions for Data Centers

Kyle Kropf  (Project Manager, Data Centers, Black & Veatch)

Location: S330BA

Date: Thursday, August 19

Time: 1:20pm - 2:20pm

Track: Mission Critical Facilities & Energy Management

Session Type: Session

Vault Recording: TBD

Audience Level: All

Today, many Data Centers rely on renewable Power Purchase Agreements to meet sustainability goals, but is this really sustainable for the long haul? The responsibility falls to the utility to balance the grid load with the right mix of renewable generation and energy storage. Data Centers are still relying heavily on carbon power sources. The renewable PPA sounds good, but it only guarantees offset of the actual power used from the grid, whether that be from renewable or carbon sources.
This presentation introduces operational upgrades that puts control of sustainable performance in the hands of the facility. It will discuss how Data Centers can achieve less dependency on the grid and fossil fuels for greater environmental impact long term. The audience will come away with a better understanding of how to apply the latest in sustainable technologies to the Data Center operation, including, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), hydrogen solutions (i.e. renewable energy stored through electrolysis, fuel cells and turbine/reciprocating engines.) and such innovations as ICE Energy Storage.

Takeaway

1.) Advantages and disadvantages of the PPA
2.) Why concentrating on data center facility upgrades is better for your long-term investment
3.) Learn the different sustainable technology options to make today and the benefits to a data center's operation
