New technologies, including AI, machine learning, quantum computing, and advances across cooling, power, and networking are significantly impacting the world of critical infrastructure. Looking ahead, technologies we have not yet envisioned will lead the list and new opportunities will multiply exponentially. But how can we ensure we have a sufficient talent pool to meet the needs of our industry in 2040?

Cultivating future leadership requires us to engage with today's children and empower them with an understanding of the foundational infrastructure that runs our digital world. Nomad Futurist co-founders Phillip Koblence and Nabeel Mahmood are back this year to invite collaboration on a crucial educational challenge:

How can we best share the wonder of our industry with children when they are receptive and full of curiosity?

While young children may use digital devices before they can read or write, they lack an understanding of how and why these devices work. Current STEAM education does not typically incorporate infrastructure fundamentals. To address this gap, we propose the development of a standard K-6 curriculum that covers foundational technologies for dissemination in schools. This material can also be leveraged and recontextualized for educational programs for older children or adults who may be interested in a career transition.

Educators and industry professionals will contribute insights. A key focus will be on how we can collectively create a curriculum that:
• Explains core concepts and building blocks in a compelling way
• Encourages critical thinking and problem solving
• Provides an introduction to digital infrastructure career options

Takeaway

Attendees will learn:
• How to help ensure we have a highly informed talent pool for the future
• The importance of combining education and diversity & inclusion efforts to expand and strengthen the pipeline of candidates
• How the Nomad Futurist Foundation is partnering to help bridge the digital divide by establishing educational programs with a focus on children in underserved communities
