The U.S. Energy Act of 2020 calls for the Department of Energy to update the 2016 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) study entitled, "United States Data Center Energy Usage Report." During this session, we will present the analytical frameworks and models from the 2016 Energy Usage Report and demonstrate how they are being modified to address significant changes in the data center landscape. For instance, the updated report will consider the rise of highly specialized hardware, artificial intelligence, edge computing, as well as the rapidly growing data demand in an increasingly interconnected world. We will conclude the session with questions for the audience to gather feedback on our modeling assumptions and data inputs.

Takeaway

  • Understand the methods used to model current and future U.S. data center energy estimates
  • Learn about emerging technologies and trends anticipated to change data center energy demand
  • Provide input for the upcoming Data Center Energy Usage Report to Congress
