The global digital transformation was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, making us more reliant on data centers to securely process and store information without interruption. Data centers are responsible for about 1% of electricity consumption worldwide and emits as much CO2 as the commercial airline industry. Large data center operators including Google, Facebook, and Microsoft have made commitments to reduce their emissions. Despite these actions, questions about the sustainability of the data center industry remain. As Omdia was developing our 2021 research agenda, sustainability was the most highlighted topic by analysts and clients. In this workshop we seek to frame the topic and provide you with tactics to make the data center more sustainable, including how to reduce energy consumption.
